What Are the Insurance Requirements for Rideshare Drivers in Texas?

As a Texas rideshare driver, you likely already know that you need to carry higher coverage limits than people who simply drive their vehicles for personal use. However, the amount of coverage you need depends on what insurance period you are in at a given moment.

Here’s what you need to know:

Texas Rideshare Insurance Periods

You need different coverages in each rideshare insurance period. The coverages you need include:

  • Period 0:
    • $30,000 of bodily injury liability coverage per individual hurt in a collision.
    • $60,000 of bodily injury liability coverage per collision.
    • $25,000 of property damage liability coverage per collision.
      • These coverages are called $30/60/25 limits.
  • Period 1:
    • $50,000 of bodily injury liability coverage per individual hurt in a collision.
    • $100,000 of bodily injury liability coverage per collision.
    • $25,000 of property damage liability coverage per collision.
      • These coverages are called $50/100/25 limits.
  • Periods 2 and 3:
    • A total of $1 million of coverage for both bodily injury and property damage.

It’s important to note that most rideshare companies provide the necessary coverages during periods 2 and 3. In addition, both Uber and Lyft offer their drivers $1 million of uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage per collision. Uber takes it even further by offering their drivers contingent collision and comprehensive coverage that take effect when you are transporting passengers.
